I know most of you have seen the Terminator movies and probably thought we would never get to that level of technology. We now are only a few short years from being able to literally program matter to whatever object we desire. An example would be having a cell phone that is able to literally become a head set or a bracelet depending on what you want and the programming that’s available for your phone. Sounds completely crazy right? Soon it won’t be. Seth Goldstein is an associate professor at Carnegie melon University who works with the U.S. Air force at Intel on this very subject. As I understand it this is also part of the research done on ” Nano technology ” Nano technology employs millions of microscopic robots to perform tasks such as cleaning clogged up arteries, brain surgery or just about anything you could program into the robots.
This technology would be similar to what the Transformer movies depicted but on a much more technical level if you can wrap your mind around the concept. Scientists say that within 20 to 25 years we will be in a constant state of change as well as everything in our existence. I’m still trying to imagine that concept and I don’t see us evolving physically, technologically or spiritually to a point where we can grasp the true meaning of what it will be like and still be able to process rational thought and maintain that thought process if you look at us now. Unless we experience a civilization ending event or commonly known as an extinction level event we, as a species, will create our own demise when we reach a level of constant change.
When the time arrives when we can program matter will we use it for good or evil? Knowing ourselves I would choose the latter and that is sad. This is what I would imagine we would use programmable matter for: ( I will make this a humerous story so I don’t have nightmares tonight).
My wife is going to the store to pick up some last minute items we always forget and along the way passe what seems like a harmless puddle. This is no ordinary puddle, it is programmable matter. After my wife passes, the puddle resumes it’s pre programmed function and continues moving down the road to our house. Why my house you ask? Well I forgot to pay the ” Energy ” bill and Al Gore has sent a ” bill collector ” to my house. At this moment I’m sitting on the couch, all vehicles running, I have 200 bottles of carbon dioxide that I’m releasing into the air, smoking a Cuban cigar, in my underwear, running the microwave for no reason and there’s a knock at the door. Before I can open the door the programmable matter has transformed into a shinning, red eyed smiling ( I think) employee of the green police here at my door to collect. I tried to tell it I paid the bill the other day and got tasered as a response. After I quit urinating on myself I got up and paid the bill with my ” carbon credit card “. I asked if I could make a request and I asked if they could send the non lethal version next time and simply ask the ” collector unit “ to use the Darth Vader technique on me. After that my last memory was lying on the ground peeing on myself again. End of story.
If you think that this type of technology will be used for good only you are living in a dream world. The military and law enforcement applications of this technology are endless and frightening, not to mention what the criminal element will do with it.
