What’s In Your Fast-Food?

Ever wonder what your chicken nuggets are really made of, or any other fast food item for that matter?

Well, here are four secrets about fast food….

What’s In a Chicken Nugget?

It’s more than just a breaded nugget of chicken.  The “meat” in the McNugget alone contains seven ingredients such as water, wheat starch, dextrose, safflower oil, sodium phosphates, and autolyzed yeast extract.  Then it is covered with a 20-ingredient breading.  Well, it’s better than Wendy’s Chicken Nuggets that have 30 ingredients, or Burger King Chicken Fries that have 35 ingredients.  I will never eat fast-food chicken nuggets again.

What’s In a Wendy’s Frosty?

Well, it’s more than just milk and ice cream.  In fact, the Wendy’s Frosty has 14 ingredients, mostly thickening agents such as guar gum, cellulose gum, and carrageenan.

The Coffee Toffee Twisted Frosty has even more ingredients with the addition of coffee syrup and coffee toffee pieces.  The coffee syrup is made up of 10 ingredients alone, some of which are water, high-fructose corn syrup, and propylene glycol; a laxative chemical that is used as an emulsifier and a filler in electronic cigarettes.  Coffee is actually the 8th ingredient on the list.

What’s In a Filet-O-Fish?  Oh boy….

The Filet-O-Fish is mostly made up hoki, an ugly crazy-eyed fish found in the cold waters off the coast of New Zealand.  Yeah, they just coat it in batter, fry it up in oil, throw some tartar sauce on it, and put it on a warm bun.  McDonald’s has purchased up to 15 million pounds of hoki per year, but New Zealand had been forced to cut the allowable catch over the years in order to keep the hoki population from diminishing.

Ok, I will never buy a Filet-O-Fish again.  Wendy’s claims that their fish sandwich is made of 100% cod, I’ll go with them.

What’s In My Salami Sandwich?

Oh, please don’t blow this for me, I love salami.

Most salami is made from slaughterhouse leftovers that are gathered using”advanced meat recovery”.  Huh?  That means that it is a mechanical process that strips the last remaining bits of muscle off the bone so nothing is wasted.  It is then processed using lactic acid, the wast product produced by bacteria in meat.  It gives the salami its tangy flavor and also cures it.  It is also made up of a bunch of salt and spices for a total of 15 ingredients in all.  Genoa salami has both cow and pig in it.

Yeah, I’ll still eat salami.
