RIP Ken Ober

Just heard that Ken Ober died today.  For those of you too young to remember, he hosted one of the very first gameshows on MTV called “Remote Control” back in the late 80s-early 90s.  The  contestants on the show had to answer several different questions on topics like television, music, and movies.  I always remember that he had a good sense of humor, and always kept the show on the funny side.  According to Yahoo, he had been complaining of “flu-like symptoms” lately… I wonder if he caught the swine flu?  My heartfelt sympathy to his family… Ken Ober was only 52 years old.

Bon Jovi On Tour…….Again?

Lately I’ve been seeing alot more Bon Jovi than I really care to see.  They’ve been all over the MLB Playoffs, having come up with some theme song or something for this year’s games.  Now I find out that they’re planning this whole World Tour that is supposed to span over 135 shows in 30 countries, according to usatoday.com.  Now, what I want to know is, how are these people still playing?  In my opinion, they weren’t that good in the first place.  They had one good record, back in like 1990, and have been putting out crap ever since.  I would like to know who put that whole tour together (probably some music exec making million dollar bonuses every year LOL).  Here I am, busting my tail 40+ hours a week, barely being able to survive and these “has-beens” are going to travel all over the world filling up stadium after stadium drinking thousand dollar bottles of champagne, and eating chocolate-covered strawberries off of a solid gold plate.  It’s ridiculous.  There are so many bands out there that are more talented, that are just trying to make ends meet by playing in some hole-in-the-wall, waiting for the day that may or may not come where they are offered a record contract.  So, it’s time to open the door for some of the unknown bands out there to have a shot, and  Bon Jovi needs to just hop up on that “steel horse” that they ride, and mosey on down the road.  That’s what I think, anyway.  And please…support your local musicians.

What’s Up With Radio Stations?

So I’m sitting at work today, listening to a Yahoo Music! radio station, and I start to get pissed off cuz I keep hearing the same things…over and over and over again.  I checked out the Alternative station, then even went to the X-107.5 station out of Vegas…same result.  Thinking that I was gonna pull a one-up on the site, I saw on the top of the screen a place where you could put in your favorite artist, and it is supposed to create a custom mix of that artist plus other music similar to the original artist you put in.  So being at work, knowing that I couldn’t let loose with something like Pearl Jam or Deftones, I typed in “Dave Matthews”.  I figured it would play a cool mix of DMB, John Mayer, Jack Johnson, etc…something cool, yet mellow, that would fit in nicely at my workplace.  Well, was I wrong.  The whole rest of the day (towards the end I just left it on there to test my theory) it played a different mixture of ONLY five different artists:  Dave Matthews Band, Hootie and the Blowfish, Sheryl Crow, Blues Traveler, and Edwin McCain.  You’ve got to be kidding me, right?  Out of ALL of the music out there in this world, the damn website could only create a mix of FIVE different artists???  WTF?  And this is Yahoo.  One of the most famous and popular search engines.  I was floored.  This really pissed me off. Dave Matthews Band – Live at Piedmont Park

Just watched this show on Palladia tonight.  Has to be one of my favorite bands of all time.  The live shows are awesome.  It’s so great to see the interplay between each member of the band.  I discovered DMB around 1995, a period that I mostly only listened to jazz.  It was easy to see that Dave’s music was different than most.  He really gets into his music, and you can tell that he enjoys what he does.  Carter Beauford has got to be one of the best rock drummers out there today, ranking right along with Neil Peart of Rush, and Travis Barker of Blink-182.  The thing that sets Carter apart from most is that he was heavily influenced by Max Roach, one of the greatest jazz drummers of all time.  You can really hear the jazz influence in everything that he plays.  Overall, it was a great show.  Definitely not as good as being there in person, but for not being able to get to a concert these days, I’ll take what I can get!

I don’t like music companies

Now let me clarify.  I love music companies.  I have like 500 or so CD’s in my collection, over 7,000 songs on my iPod.  But what I really hate about music companies, is that they are all into it for the money.  My wife and I were watching TV the other day, and a commercial came on that had an old New Order song on it (now this really dates me LOL).  I turned to my wife and said, “Babe, I love this song.”  I have always loved the song.  It was on their CD called “Substance”.  Now here’s where the blood pressure starts to rise.  Over my lifetime, I have owned this tape, CD, whatever you want to call it like five different times.  Read More.....
